Program Description
In Story Structure, a creative writing workshop, students explore the basic elements of story structure as Kolb guides them through an interactive session to plot their own stories. She’ll lead students in a group activity to brainstorm the basic structural elements, i.e. “beats”, as a vehicle for discussing and learning story structure. Concepts are streamlined for grade level and timeframe or expanded into a writing workshop where students continue to work individually or in groups to create their own “books.” This activity can be completed with classroom teacher guidance and supervision. Prior to the workshop, Kolb will coordinate with teachers to tailor this program to best fit their class and writing curriculum.
Presenter Bio
Robin Kolb is an award-winning author who lives in Western Montana. Growing up, she spent countless hours riding her pony or reading a book. Her love of teaching began as a geology graduate student lab instructor. She and her husband raised two independent daughters who also grew up with a passion for reading and riding their ponies. So, when her daughters started clamoring for more horse stories, she started writing her own. The result is Galloping Away, a middle grade novel published by Montana-based Chicken Scratch Books. Kolb is a former teacher, both at the college level and K-12, and riding instructor. These days, in addition to writing and reading, you can find her hiking with her Australian Shepherds, shooting a traditional bow, or baking horse-shaped cookies.
